Foam cups, and why they still run most drive-throughs

Foam insulates. Coffee stays hot without a sleeve, iced tea stays cold without sweating on the dash, and the cup itself costs less than paper. That is the whole case for foam, and for a high-volume counter it is a strong one.

The 8 oz size pairs with Dart-pattern lids: a vented white lid for hot drinks, a translucent straw-slot lid for cold, and the Lift n’ Lock for sipping on the move. The 12 to 24 oz cups share one rim, so one lid case covers the whole mid-range of a drink menu.

LID NOTE

Foam rims are softer than plastic. Push the lid on evenly around the rim rather than pressing one side first, or it seats crooked and drips.

Which lid fits a 8 oz foam cup?

Look for the Dart lid code that lists this size. The 12, 14, 16, 20 and 24 oz cups share the 16-series lids; the 32 and 44 oz pedestal cups use the 32-series.

Hot or cold?

Both. Foam holds temperature either way, which is why one cup can run coffee in the morning and iced tea at lunch.
