Shipping envelopes, and when to use one

Poly mailers are waterproof, tear-resistant and weigh almost nothing, which is why apparel and soft-goods sellers default to them. They protect against weather and abrasion, not impact.

The postage maths usually decides it. Anything that survives a firm squeeze ships cheaper in a mailer; anything that does not needs a box with room for cushioning. Getting that call right on your top-selling SKU is worth more than most packaging decisions.

PACKING TIP

Seal the strip fully across its width — a partly-pressed self-seal is the most common cause of a mailer opening in transit.
